Kinja'd!!!

My family has a boat that we trailer using a Mazda Tribute. We don't trailer it all that often and as a result of the infrequent usage, the vehicle side of the plug gets seriously corroded. It's at the point where the plug has to be replaced every few years. Anyone have a suggestion for protecting the plug during the rugged Canadian offseason? There is a loose fitting plug but that seems about as watertight as a sieve.

A condom.

Vaseline.

Could you buy a spare of the other side of the connector (the thing that's on the trailer) and plug it into the Tribute side packed with something protective like grease? Seems like that would at least slow down the corrosion. Maybe there's something they use on boats to protect connections like this?

You could get some grease and a matching plug cap.

Instead of running the wire outside of the car 365 days a year, I leave our extra long car-side wire wound up in the spare tire well, then the 10 times a year I trailer, I pull it out, connect it and just slam the gate down on it. As long as the wire stays away from the latch, it works just fine.

I really was trying to be serious. You guys take me for some clown sometimes it seems.

Vaseline will repel water, as will a condom with a rubber band.

I've actually heard that before. Sounds like there's something to it.

That would be a good option. Any specific kind of grease?

I would probably go with something like a Dielectric grease. Same type of thing used on battery terminals and cannon plugs

dielectric grease. Same stuff you should use on spark plug boots, and coils/cop.

Just about every piece of advice I had has just been covered.

Dielectric grease, trailers, condoms, grease, and a plug. Sounds like a great weekend.
